Indication-Specific Research

Overview of the study situation of indication-related research

From the large number of works with a high qualitative and conceptual heterogeneity (complex remedies, single remedies, different research approaches, etc.), valid works on single remedy homeopathy were selected as examples in order to present an overview of well-founded clinical research. The list is not complete and will be updated continuously.

Explanation of CORE-Hom

The Clinical Outcome Research in Homeopathy (CORE-Hom) database was created by the Carstens Foundation as a research database for clinical outcome studies on homeopathy. It comprises a total of 1,383 clinical outcome studies on homeopathy, ranging from randomised controlled trials to observational studies.

However, there have been no updates from the Carstens Foundation since around 2018. The database is currently available on the website of the Homeopathy Research Institute (HRI) and can be used after registration: https://www.hri-research.org/resources/research-databases/core-hom/.

An overview of other databases on homeopathy research can be found here.

Legend

n: Number of papers found in CORE Hom
C: Complex remedies
I: Individualized homeopathy
U: Unclear design
PubM: Number of listed papers in Pubmed

The above numbers refer to the time of the query and are subject to fluctuation, and will be updated as more papers are added.

Anxiety and depression

Anxiety n:19 C:11 I:7 U:1 PubM:97 (Panic disorder:5) (as of 12/2019)

Depression n:5 C:2 I:2 U:1 PubM:105 (as of 12/2019)

Patients with depressive anxiety disorders require significantly less psychotropic medication and show at least equivalent psychological stabilization compared to conventional therapy in GP attendance (EP-13 cohort study Grimaldi-Mensouda et al., 2016).

CONCLUSION: Patients with ADD (Anxiety and Depression Disorders) who consulted primary care physicians who prescribed homeopathy reported lower use of psychotropic drugs and showed a slightly higher likelihood of clinical improvement than patients treated with conventional care. The results may reflect differences in physician treatment and patient preferences, as well as statistical regression to the mean.

Abstract

Homeopathic treatment of post-menopausal depression showed significant effects compared to fluoxetine and placebo, with additional relief of menopausal symptoms under homeopathic treatment (Macias-Cortes et al., 2015).

CONCLUSION: Homeopathy and fluoxetine are effective and safe antidepressants for menopausal women. Homeopathy and fluoxetine differed significantly from placebo only in the response definition. However, only homeopathy, but not fluoxetine, improved menopausal symptoms as assessed by the Greene Climacteric Scale.

Abstract

Climacteric complaints

Climacteric Distress Syndrome n:3 C:2 I:1 PubM:2 (as of 08/2022).

Postmenopausal symptoms respond significantly positively to homeopathic treatment i. Vgl. to placebo. Homeopathic treatment can be recommended as an alternative to hormone replacement therapy (HRT) - multicenter double-blind randomized study (Colau et al., 2011).

CONCLUSION: The homeopathic complex remedy BRN-01 appeared to have a significant effect on the hot flash score (HFS) compared to placebo. According to the results of this clinical trial, BRN-01 can be considered as a new therapeutic option with a safe profile for hot flashes in menopausal women who do not wish or are unable to take hormone replacement therapy or other approved treatments for this indication.

Abstract

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia n:8 C:2 I:6 PubM:41 (as of 12/2019).

Individualized homeopathy showed significantly better outcome in fibromyalgia syndrome compared to placebo on core parameters: muscle pain scores (tender points), increase in quality of life, and overall health. (Bell et al., 2004).

CONCLUSION: This study replicates and extends a previous one-month placebo-controlled crossover study in fibromyalgia, in which only one homeopathic remedy was pre-tested. Using a wide range of medicines and the flexible LM dose series (1/50 000 dilution factor), the present study demonstrated that individualized homeopathy was significantly superior to placebo in relieving tender-point pain, improving quality of life, and improving global health in individuals with fibromyalgia.

Abstract

This was confirmed in another meta-analysis with review regarding: muscle pain points, pain intensity and fatigue (Boehm et al., 2014).

CONCLUSION: The results of the studies, as well as the case reports, provide a sufficient basis to discuss the possible benefits of homeopathy for patients with fibromyalgia syndrome, although all conclusions based on the results of this review must be considered "preliminary".

Abstract

Respiratory infections

Respiratory tract infections n:28 C:22 I:4 U:2 PubM:66 (as of 12/2019).

Patients with upper respiratory tract infections require significantly less antibiotics and antipyretics/pain medications with homeopathic therapy (Grimaldi-Bensouda et al., 2014, EP-13 Cohort study).

CONCLUSION: Patients who chose homeopathically certified primary care physicians used fewer antibiotics and antipyretic/anti-inflammatory medications for upper respiratory tract infections than those treated by primary care physicians who prescribed conventional medications. No difference was observed in patients consulting family physicians in mixed practice. In the group of certified homeopaths, the number of participants was slightly higher. The adjustment for statistical bias was performed by mathematical modeling and will be investigated for relevance in the future.

Abstract

Sinusitis

Sinusitis n:5 C:4 I:1 PubM:8 (as of 12/2019).

In the treatment of chronic sinusitis (550 patient:s), there was statistically significant improvement including radiological control at 3 and 6 months. There were no complications in any case (Nayak et al., 2012).

CONCLUSION: Homeopathic treatment may be effective in patients with chronic sinusitis. However, further controlled studies are needed for further validation.

Abstract

Neurodermatitis / Atopy / Allergic complaints

Neurodermatitis n:14 I: 14 PubM:2 (as of 12/2019)

Atopy n:2 I:2 PubM:67 (as of 12/2019)

Allergic rhinitis n:5 I:5 PubM:66 (as of 12/2019)

In the treatment of Neurodermatitis / Atopy, a longitudinal observational study of 857 patients over a period of more than 8 years showed a significant improvement in clinical symptoms in about two-thirds to three-quarters of all cases. Children with allergies, asthma and eczema were included. The results clearly show that in children with atopy and eczema, significantly positive results can be achieved in homeopathic treatment (Rossi et al., 2016).

CONCLUSION: The results seem to confirm that homeopathic treatment produces a clear effective therapeutic response in atopic children (significant remission, even in the long-term course after 5-10 years of 70.1%).

Abstract

Patients with allergic symptoms respond significantly to homeopathic treatment, with significant reduction of all symptoms (40 of 44 patients) without adverse side effects - multicenter prospective observational study) (Gründling et al., 2012).

CONCLUSION: The symptoms of patients undergoing homeopathic treatment improved significantly and the dosage of conventional medications was significantly reduced. While the Real-Life Effect studied indicates a potential for improving therapeutic interventions and reducing healthcare costs, it does not allow conclusions to be drawn about the efficacy of homeopathic treatment per se.

Abstract

Asthma

Asthma n:4 I:3 U:1 PM: 133 all PubM:66 children (as of 12/2019)

In a study of asthma in children, individualized homeopathy by experienced homeopaths showed a significant effect on the course of the disease over a period of 6 months. This concerned the frequency of obstructive attacks, reduction of conventional medication, disturbed night sleep and spirometric examinations (Shafei et al., 2012).

CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence that homeopathic medicines, when prescribed by experienced homeopathic physician:s, improve the severity of asthma in children. Controlled studies should be conducted.

Abstract

Carcinoma Diseases

Carcinoma diseases n:29 C:10 I:15 U:4 PubM:345 (as of 12/2019)

Homeopathy and cancer: In a comparison between complementary homeopathic treatment and conventional treatment in cancer patients, the homeopathically treated patients benefited in the short- and long-term observation with regard to quality of life and fatigue. In the conventional group these complaints increased. Anxiety and depression showed no change in the comparison of the groups (Rostock et al., 2011).

CONCLUSION: In this prospective study, an improvement in quality of life, as well as a tendency to decrease fatigue symptoms, was observed in cancer patients under complementary homeopathic treatment. However, in order to establish a clear causal relationship between these effects and homeopathic treatment, significantly larger samples would be needed to find matched pairs suitable for comparison.

Abstract

Sepsis

Sepsis n:2 I:1 U:1 PubM:15 (as of 12/2019)

Homeopathy in sepsis: Intensive care patients show a significantly increased long-term survival rate (180d) with additive homeopathic treatment, without side effects (Frass et al., 2005).

CONCLUSION: The data from this study suggest that homeopathic treatment, for severely septic patient:s admitted to the ICU, may be a useful additional therapeutic intervention with long-term benefits. An obstacle for a wider application of this method is the limited number of appropriately trained homeopaths.

Abstract

Psoriasis

Psoriasis n:7 C:4 I:3 PubM:19 (as of 12/2019)

In the treatment of patients with psoriasis, a significant alleviation of the severity of the skin condition and an improvement of the quality of life could be shown in a 2-year interval, while at the same time conventional medication could be reduced (Witt et al., 2009).

CONCLUSION: Under classical homeopathic treatment, the symptoms and also the quality of life improved in patients with psoriasis.

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea

Dysmenorrhea n:5 C:1 I:3 U:1 PubM:10 (as of 12/2019)

In patients with dysmenorrhea, homeopathic treatment at 2-year intervals showed a significant reduction in pain with increased quality of life. (Investigation of 128 women in a prospective observational study.) (Witt C., Lüdtke R. et al., 2009).

CONCLUSION: The symptoms of patients with dysmenorrhea improved under homeopathic treatment. Controlled studies should investigate the remedy efficacy and efficacy in patient application.

Abstract

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

ADHD n:23 C:5 I:18 PubM:37 (as of 12/2019).

In a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 83 children, significant clear improvement was seen in ADHD. This affected all parameters for: general cognition, visual perception, and attention (Frei et al., 2005).

CONCLUSION: The study suggests scientific evidence for the efficacy of homeopathy in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, especially in the areas of behavior and cognitive functioning.

Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

COPD Intensive Care n:2 I:2 PubM:5 (as of 12/2019)

Treatment of ventilated intensive care patients with COPD showed a significant response with relief of sticky, stringy tracheal secretions as a result of treatment with Kalium bichromicum C30H compared to placebo. Extubation could thus be performed much earlier (Frass et al., 2005).

CONCLUSION: These data suggest that potentized (diluted and vigorously shaken) potassium bichromicum may help reduce the amount of stringy tracheal secretions in COPD patients.

Abstract

Diarrhea

Diarrhea n:8 I:7 U:1 PubM:55 (as of 12/2019)

In three double-blinded studies, individualized homeopathic treatment was shown to have a significant effect on reducing symptoms and shortening duration of illness in infantile diarrhea (Jacobs et al., 1994, 2000, 2003 & 2006).

CONCLUSION: The statistically significant decrease in diarrhea duration in the treatment group suggests that homeopathic treatment may be useful in acute childhood diarrhea. Further studies on this treatment deserve attention. (Jacobs et al., 1994)

Abstract

CONCLUSION: The results of the meta-analysis of 3 randomized controlled clinical trials confirmed that individualized homeopathic treatment shortens the duration of acute diarrhea in children. However, larger samples should be used in future homeopathic research to ensure adequate statistical power. Homeopathy should be considered as an adjunct to oral rehydration in this. (Jacobs et.al., 2003)

Abstract

Otitis media

Otitis media n:21 C:5 I:14 U:2 PubM:35 (as of 12/2019).

In the treatment of children with otitis media with homeopathy, showed in all parameters, such as the duration of pain, fever and relapse frequency within one year showed significant benefits in the homeopathy group i. Vgl. to conventional therapy (Friese et al., 1997, Jacobs et al., 2001).

Abstract (Friese et al., 1997)

CONCLUSION: The following results suggest that a positive treatment effect of homeopathy compared to placebo in acute otitis media cannot be excluded and that a larger study is warranted. (Jacobs et al., 2001)

Abstract (Jacobs et al., 2001)

Musculoskeletal complex of complaints

Chronic back pain n:7 C:5 I:2 PubM:9 (as of 12/2019)

Muscle pain n:34 C:22 U:12 PubM:15 (as of 12/2019)

The study of 1153 patients with musculoskeletal complaint complexes showed, comparing three groups: Primary care by pure homeopathic treatment, CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicines) combined with conventional medicine or exclusively conventional medicine (CM) no clinically relevant differences. Chronicity[2] was highest in the homeopathy group (62.1%) compared with conventional therapy (48.6%) and a mixed group with CAM procedures (50.3%). However, patients in the homeopathy group required only half of the usual analgesics/anti-inflammatories over 12 months (Rossignol et al., 2012).

CONCLUSION: Patients with musculoskeletal complaint complexes treated by homeopathic physicians showed similar clinical progression despite treatment with fewer nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), compared with patients treated in practices exclusively with conventional medicine. They had fewer NSAID-related side effects without loss of therapeutic options.

Abstrac

Patients with chronic lumbalgia respond significantly to homeopathic treatment. In a two-year prospective observational study, patients under homeopathic treatment showed significant and sustained improvements in the severity of diagnoses and complaints with large effect sizes, and the quality of life improved accordingly. The use of conventional treatment and health services decreased significantly: the number of patients taking medication for back pain was half of the baseline (Witt et al., 2009).

DISCUSSION: Classical homeopathic treatment is an effective treatment for back pain and other diagnoses. It improves health-related quality of life and reduces use of other health services.

Abstract

Multimorbidity

Multimorbid patients (not registered) PubM:6 (as of 12/2019)

In a prospective outcome study of multimorbid diseases, it was shown on the basis of 43 patients that 91% of the cases benefited significantly from the treatment. The cost of homeopathic treatment was 41% compared to other conventional therapy. The result suggests that homeopathy can play a significant role in the treatment of these patients (Frei et al., 2015).

RESULTS: Polarity analysis is an effective method for treating multimorbidity. Despite the multitude of symptoms, good results can be obtained with this method. With homeopathy it may be possible to provide a significant part of the treatment of multimorbid patient:s, at a lower cost than with conventional medicine.
